HISTORY
The Bayard Rustin High School for the Humanities, located at 351
West 18th, opened its doors in September 1983. This college preparatory
public high school places its main emphasis on the humanities but maintains
a strong foundation in the sciences. The concentration on fields of interest
dealing with the humanities facilitates not only basic literacy but conceptual,
critical, and aesthetic skills. In addition, studying of the humanities
encourages students to value cultural tradition and cultural change. Commitment
to these interests promotes active citizenship and private contemplation.
By incorporating a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach to learning,
the school hopes to maximize opportunities for student growth, achievement,
recognition, responsibility and advancement. Additional unique features
include: community service and internship programs, a formal linkage program
to Channel 13, Distance Learning Programs, and advanced studies available
through Advanced Placement courses and college collaboratives.
The Bayard Rustin High School for the Humanities
can be reached by:
subway on the L train to the 8th Avenue Station or
